Michael Southwell’s Academic Career
Michael Southwell was a Professor in the Department of English
at York College/CUNY for 35 years.
Southwell is the author of GrammarLab,
a set of tutorial computer programs in the grammar and syntax of standard English.
NOTE: GrammarLab is no longer being supported.
Southwell is the co-author (with Mary Epes) of
Mastering Written English,
a workbook designed to provide students in remedial composition classes
with instruction in the grammar and syntax of Standard Written English.
Now in its 6th edition, Mastering Written English has over 20 years
helped thousands
of students learn how to write more correctly and more clearly.
Southwell is the co-author (with Mary Epes) of
Mastering Written Sentences,
a workbook designed to provide students at all levels with supplementary
instruction in syntax. Inexpensive, flexible, and self-instructional,
Mastering Written Sentences can help students learn how to write
sentences that are more correct, more clear, and more effective.
Southwell’s Retirement
Southwell retired at the end of the Spring 2001 semester.
Some of Southwell’s Other Interests
our new house (well, ok, not so new any more)
Images were introduced
because many people cannot retain in their memories what they hear
but they do remember if they see images.
